Redeveloping our Church for the 21st Century
Over the last couple of years we have been seeking god's guidance on how to develop the premises at Strathmore Road Methodist Church that they may better serve our church and the mission of God in this community. We keep being reminded of Jesus' words in the Sermon on the mount when he said:
You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colours in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:14-16 The Message
The words of Jesus keep coming back to us as we have sought the guidance of the Holy Spirit: "open up, let people see, live generously, you are here to be light, shine brightly". For many in our community, our building is a closed shop and the proposal to open up the building by building a new welcoming entrance area, kitchen and facilities that also connect to the rear garden is one that has been welcomed by the members and friends of the church.
Following the overwhelming approval of the annual church meeting, the church council agreed to develop the church premises. In many ways this is just the beginning: having made that decision of faith, we now , as a whole church, need to put it into action.
It would be easier to keep our light hidden, but it is exciting that God is this time wanting us to open up, be generous and to trust in Him.
